From a local team to the J.League
The Club's Journey
A story of persistence, promotion, and a football club growing together with its supporters.
A long road upward
Kamatamare Sanuki began its push toward the J.League in 2006, growing from the local club Takamatsu FC. At the time, the team played in the Shikoku regional league, several levels below Japan's professional divisions.
Promotion was not immediate. The club won regional matches but repeatedly fell short in the difficult national promotion rounds. Those setbacks became an important part of its story: the goal remained the same, and the team continued to strengthen on and off the pitch.
Breaking through
The first major breakthrough came in 2010. Kamatamare won the Shikoku league, the national amateur championship, and the regional promotion tournament. This finally earned the club a place in the Japan Football League, known as the JFL.
The JFL brought the club closer to professional football. Crowds grew, the club received approval as a J.League associate member, and the possibility of bringing J.League football to Kagawa became real.
The step into the J.League
In 2013, Kamatamare finished second in the JFL and faced Gainare Tottori in a promotion play-off. Winning that tie secured promotion to J2. The 2014 season was the club's first as a full J.League member.
Competing in J2 was demanding, and several seasons became battles to stay in the division. After five years in J2, the club was relegated to J3 at the end of 2018. That result changed the league level, but not the club's place in Kagawa.
The club today
Kamatamare now competes in J3 while continuing to develop as a community-based club. The aim is not only to achieve results on the pitch, but also to create opportunities for people across Kagawa to meet, support their local team, and enjoy football together.
Youth development, football schools, hometown activities, and local events connect the professional team with the next generation and with communities beyond the stadium.
A journey shared with supporters
Local supporters have followed the club from regional grounds to the J.League. They have celebrated promotions, endured difficult seasons, and continued to create a home atmosphere in Marugame.
For a visitor, this is part of what makes a match meaningful. You are not only watching ninety minutes of football—you are seeing a club and its community continue a journey that began long before its first J.League match.
